Keeping An Eye Out - Federal Friday

Hello everyone!

I know it's been a while, which is why I've got four items for you!

First, I've got a quick update on Secondhand Smoke, the bioethics blog I follow... It moved!! Here's the new address. If you've not read him before, I highly recommend it. The bioethics debate affects our basic rights so it is very, very important to be abreast of what is going on, scary though it may be.

Second: Whew, after something heavy like bioethics, you'll need something lighter. Here it is, one of my favorite Stoplight video's from the past month or so:

Hope you enjoy this!

Third: A lot of people probably got a chance to see this live, and more have likely seen this video, but I want to be sure everyone at least knows it exists. Glenn Beck interviewed Rush Limbaugh a few nights ago on Fox. It's a really great interview, available here - take a few minutes and watch it, or read the transcript if you prefer.

Forth: Last but not least, if you watch Glenn Beck's show on Fox News, you may have noticed the US Debt Clock. You may not have noticed that it's also a real website that anyone has access to. Anyhow, here it is, and I hope you take a look at it. I'll also be linking to it in my sidebar links.

Colorado is a wonderful place, and as summer is drawing to a close earlier than I'm used to from Virginia, I'm feeling that political spirit rise a bit early... hope you do too, there's a lot at stake this summer. Go to your town hall meetings, if you have any, get connected with some email loops from tea party or 9-12 groups, spend a few hours at some rallies, calling senators, et cetera and perhaps we can turn this country around!

(Oh, and to all of you in and around Virginia, there are early rumblings about the campaigns. Those are very important elections, so be sure to get involved there too.)

At the end of it all, God is in control of all this, so be sure to keep praying!

Federal Friday: Republican's Going the Right Direction!

Below is commentary from Gary Bauer's End of Day Report, but first, I first want to state some things very clearly concerning what has happened regarding the "Stimulus" Bill:

1) Nancy Pelosi and President Obama shut out the Republican's from having any say in the "stimulus" bill... I.E., not one Republican wrote one word of it!
2) The Republican's stood strong against the "stimulus" bill, and not one Republican voted for it!
Translation: Not ONE Republican can be tied to this bill... if (or, rather, when) it fails, not one Republican will be able to become the Democratic scape goat!

This is excellent news... yes, even though the thing passed, it is a huge step in the "Right" direction for the Republicans! (Please pardon the pun)

From Gary Bauer's End of Day Report:

GOP Stands Firm!
Congratulations to House Republicans! Few thought they could do it, but they held together, stood firm and voted unanimously against the pork-filled monstrosity. The bill is over 600 pages long, and by one estimate it will cost us approximately $1.8 billion per page.

Of course, the liberal media wait until the day after it passes the House before they tell the American people what is in the bill. Remember all those “shovel ready” infrastructure programs President Obama promised? Well, the Boston Globe reports this headline today, “Only 5 percent of $819b plan would go toward infrastructure.”

The New York Times tells us, “Components of Stimulus Vary in Speed and Efficiency.” Speed and efficiency should be the most important considerations in any serious stimulus bill, but this was not a serious stimulus bill. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that most of the money will not be spent until 2010 or years later. In addition, the Associated Press reports today that the bill may even allow illegal aliens to qualify for additional benefits.

Here’s the truth: This is not an economic stimulus bill at all. It is a Democrat Party stimulus bill – payoffs to leftwing special interest groups with your tax money! The public may slowly be waking up. A new Rasmussen poll finds that only 42% of likely voters support this “stimulus” plan.

But even with the GOP voting unanimously against the bill, and even with 11 brave Democrats also voting against it, this budget buster passed by a wide margin of 244-to-188. It passed because the Democrats defeated dozens and dozens of conservatives in the past two elections by outspending us and outworking us.

This vote should be a wake-up call to conservatives who have walked away from the GOP, who backed third party candidates with no hope of winning or who just didn’t bother to vote at all. Elections have consequences. And when conservatives don’t participate, the Left will always win.
Here’s my point: The next two years will be rough and there will be many setbacks. But Republicans are fighting back! And rather than focusing our frustration on our friends in the minority party, let’s remember who is setting the agenda and who control Congress – Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. Now, let’s get to work rebuilding our conservative movement so we can take back Capitol Hill in 2010! There are reasons to be encouraged about the future, and I will report them in the days ahead.

Media Distortions

Big liberal media are very good at taking a falsehood and repeating it over and over again until it is accepted as fact. Let me tell you what you’re going to hear in the next few days, because it’s already started. The Republicans are going to get slammed day after day for opposing the president and for “irresponsible partisanship,” as Nancy Pelosi’s press release put it today. After all, President Obama went to Capitol Hill and spent two hours with Republicans trying to win their support. How dare they vote against his top priority!

But bi-partisan means that both sides give up something and both sides get something. This bill was written by Democrats and the Obama White House. None of the GOP’s ideas were incorporated in the bill. It was Obama and Pelosi who killed bi-partisanship – not the GOP.

Here’s something else you need to know. In the next few days, the Left will flood GOP offices with angry messages, saying they will never get reelected. If your representative is a Republican, please call and thank him or her. The number is 202-224-3121. Simply ask the operator to connect you to your congressman’s office.

I went to Capitol Hill today to thank as many House Republicans as I could. Then I went to the Senate, where the fight is about to begin, and I encouraged Senate conservatives to close ranks behind our key principles of lower taxes, less spending and support for traditional values.

FF: Thanksgiving!... Christmas!... Lightsmas... Tossmas?

Thanksgiving is coming, and we are all looking forward to it.

After that, the exact day after, actually, starts a family tradition that is very longstanding. This year it got a new name, though, "lightsmas". It is the day we all celebrate decorating for Christmas, and of course, putting up the absolutely necessary lights (Buddy's pride, joy and passion).

Then comes Christmas, we're looking forward to that too.

But there is one holiday that we are enjoying already, have been since late October, and will be until late December...

Tossmas.

This holiday was made up by Stuart Shepard on his video feature, Stoplight, in early November, 2007. It was presented in this Stoplight:

&abouttext=Focus Action's CitizenLink&aboutlink=http://www.citizenlink.com allowfullscreen=true allowscriptaccess=always>

I was hoping that they would do something concerning Tossmas this year, or at least move last year's up to the top of the list. I am very happy to say that they made another one this year:

Now, this is all well and good, and the video's are quite funny, and it makes a good point, but why is this a Federal Friday post? Because, it is time we spoke out and quit letting ourselves be marginalized when we are indeed the majority - something that the republican party needed to learn a few years ago, by the way. It is our holiday... Christmas. It is Christmas that makes all the stores their money, and we need to remind them of that.

Pure and simple, political correctivism has gone too far, and we ought to put some pressure on people to stop it. The AFA has also started a Christmas campaign, and we have ordered some of their stuff, it's great.

In other words, get out, say "Merry Christmas" to every store clerk you talk to, even if they say "happy holidays" or whatever, become a passionate participant in Tossmas, and recognize the importance of this issue.

(Happy Thanksgiving, and Merry Christmas early)

Federal Friday: The New Reagan Revolution

There is a lot of speculation as to what Obama will do, when he will do it, etc. There is also some speculation, particularly amongst evangelicals, quiet as it may be, concerning whether Obama's presidency will have any ties to the end-times prophesies found in Daniel, Matthew and Revelation.

I will deal with the latter first. Allow me to ask a question. Supposing, somehow, we were able to say absolutely and without any doubt that Obama is the antichrist (I am NOT suggesting this, please simply follow for a moment). How would we react? Would we not still fight those policies we disagree with that he presents and supports? Would we not still do all in our power to support those things that we believe must be supported? So, in fact, it really doesn't matter if he is, isn't, is going to be, et cetera the antichrist? Therefore, isn't it simply a distraction from more important issues, a distraction that we needn't deal with?

The end times are a very interesting and worthy study. However, trying to fit current events into them beyond simple speculation and curiosity seems to me to be a loss of the point.

Now, as to what, when and how Obama will do what he does. Yes, there are many fights ahead of us. There are many things to be dealt with. Yes, strategies are good things, and yes, we must be prepared to deal with them. However, we simply must not go overboard in trying to win every single battle before those battles are even begun. Here's something to chew on: Obama can't do everything at once either, and we will match his pace.

I, obviously, love politics, and I think them terribly important. I do think that many of the values I hold dear are at stake. Only a few years ago, I would have been truly concerned, somewhat frantic, and planning to build a bomb shelter in the basement until my parents talked me out of it, if this situation had happened then. However, I must say that I am not really all that frantic or overwrought. Concerned, yes. Ready to fight, yes. But, I think we simply must take measured steps. This DOES NOT mean standing down. I actually think that it means fighting even BETTER.

Here is what I am suggesting. Deal with the NOW. Simple as that. Once inaugurated, Obama has promised that one of the first things he will do is repeal DOMA (the Defence Of Marriage Act). Let's deal with that battle when it comes. If he next tries to pull out of Iraq, let's deal with that when it comes. When he tries to allow all abortion, all the time, for any reason, we will deal with that when it comes. Let's truly deal with it, but let's not overstep ourselves.

Here's a great way to accomplish this. Michael Reagan, Ronald Reagan's son, has launched a new website, http://www.reaganaction.com/. It is not yet fully functional, but it is supposed to be sometime next week. I would suggest that you read what he has to say.

What he is trying to accomplish through the site is to spread a daily action piece, usually taking only a few minutes, to inundate Congress and the White House with calls, faxes, emails etc, telling them what we think, and turning us, the "masses", all into political activists. I see this as an excellent way to deal with each battle as it comes, and REALLY deal with it.

Now, of course, I don't know how the site will work precisely, but the idea is what I like. This is how we all can and must deal with the next four years. We mustn't get weary, we mustn't lose our fighting spirit (if you don't have one just now, go read the page that's up on Reagan Action) and we must start the New Reagan Revolution!

Federal Friday: Polls vs. Election Reputation

I know it's Wednesday, but since I will be campaigning from either Thursday night or Friday through Tuesday of next week, I have to put up this week's Federal Friday rather early. (Besides, there's something I want to write about)

The Rasmussen Presidential Tracking Poll released today puts us at a 3 point race: Obama 50% McCain 47%. This is a large improvement for McCain. As the report explains,

"Prior to today’s update, Obama had been ahead by four-to-eight points every single day for 33 straight days..."

This poll also has some other interesting numbers, including:

-One percent (1%) of voters prefer a third-party option and 2% are undecided
-Among those who have already voted, it’s Obama 54% McCain 45%
-As for those who have not yet voted but are “certain” they will do so, the race is tied at 48%
-Two percent (2%) of these “certain” voters plan to vote for a third party option while 2% say they are undecided

Why this sudden change? Rush has been saying for the last two months that the polls would tighten as we got closer to the election. Interpretation: the pollsters must hedge their bets. Remember in the Bush/Kerry race? They had practically called the election for Kerry by noon (citing poll numbers that had been played with) trying to get the remaining republicans from 'bothering' to go vote. Then, Bush won. All the pollsters looked like fools... and they don't want that to happen again. So, since you can't prove by actual vote counting what actually happened in the weeks leading up to an election, but you can certainly prove what happened just before and during the election, they're straightening out their act.

And to further ensure that their reputation doesn't get further tarnished, this was included in the Rasmussen report:

"It will take another day or so to determine whether today’s numbers
reflect a lasting change or statistical noise."

Now, I really can't blame them for further hedging their bets, but I do think it helps prove the point.

Conclusion: This race is terribly tight, and every little bit of volunteering, and certainly every vote will, does, and must count!

(Also see Polls vs. Us, and particularly the Stoplight video included)

Federal Friday: One Vote to stop Democratic Halloweens

So, with all the serious political postings of late, I decided to provide some comedy relief. Now, personally, we don't celebrate halloween, but this cartoon is very funny - and representative of the liberal viewpoint - so it belongs in today's Federal Friday.

The poor kids... just trying to make their way in the world of candy gathering, and they get stripped of the fruits of their labors!

NO!! That is not what is happening! The Democrat is trying to take away the fruits of their labors. But, if we reach the analogy to our current situation, we see that the kids (voters, taxpayers) are able to decide whether or not the Democrat (Obama and other candidates) gets to do what he plans.

(Now, of course, I can't make it all fun and games, so here's the serious section)

With that in mind, remember, no matter what the media, politicians or others tell you, your vote will count! This video is a little longer than usual, and isn't a Stoplight, but is very good and well worth the time.

One last thing: the polls that aren't being manipulated are still showing either a 2 point race, or tighter! Make up that slight difference by showing up in greater numbers than anyone imagined possible!

Federal Friday "Just ONE Reason!" = Abortion

A number of people have mentioned that they would like "just ONE reason" to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket. On my last Federal Friday post, I think I provided some good reasons NOT to vote for Obama, and thereby good reasons to vote for McCain-Palin. But, if you want a reason to vote for McCain-Palin for there own sakes, here is one:

I have had the opportunity to come into close contact with a number of Special Needs children and adults. It pains me when people try to marginalize them socially, but in particular when these wonderful human beings become the targets of infanticide disguised as "choice"... abortion. Sarah Palin in this video has voiced what people who believe in the preciousness of life, particularly that of Special Needs children, have been waiting to hear from a prominant public figure for years. This deserves GREAT applause.

Also, remeber that this is not simply an issue of aborting Special Needs Children, this is about ALL abortion, as in completely unlimited abortion.

So, in short, applaud Sarah Palin's views, and applaud Senator McCain for choosing someone with this much grit! This could be that ONE reason you need... it's certainly the only one I need.

September 11, 2008

Federal [almost] Friday: Mr. Obama?

First, may I say that I fully support the McCain-Palin ticket, and particularly McCain's pick of Palin. We went to one of their rallies, heard them speak, and particularly heard the huge enthusiasm of the crowd - if anyone is worried about the Republican energy level, fear no longer, we are as energized as we come!

There are two reasons I am writing. Both are widely available on the Internet.

1) The "sound-bite of the day".
The now-infamous blip: "Jesus Christ was a community organizer, and Pontius Pilot was a governor", started on blogs, was repeated by numerous Obama-people, sniped at Governor Palin and is simply offensive to Christians.

This has a number of overtones:
I. That Obama (a former community organizer) is comparable to Jesus Christ, the Perfect Lamb of God. This is obviously offensive to those who believe that Jesus Christ died for the world, rose on the third day, and is equal with God.
II. That Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin has committed some sort of action comparable to condemning Jesus to death. This is an absolute snipe at her - without even a clear accusation.
III. That a community organizer counts as part of the list of needed qualifications to be President of the United States of America. Senator Obama has a very thin list of accomplishments, and his job qualifications list is also sparse - usually called a thin resume. This is again a snipe at the competition without really providing the reasons why he thinks he is qualified.

As a note here, I would like to add this. Many people are very upset with comments made by Sarah Palin and numerous republicans about community organizers. I would like to say that they are missing the point. From my perspective, these comments are not pointed towards community organizers, but are aimed at Obama and his claim of qualification for the Presidency. They are not intended to slam community organizers.

Mr. Obama? How long will you allow yourself to be compared with Christ, and how long will you allow your supporters to snipe at your very worthy opponent, Sarah Palin, without so much as leveling a clear accusation?

2) Iraq War Veteran's own "Mr. Obama?"
This video is incomparable. It is the best articulation against Obama I think I have heard, especially on the issue of the War on Terror in Iraq:

Please, send out this link and spread this video as much as you can, it is too powerful to leave alone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG4fe9GlWS8

Conclusion:
Well, Mr. Obama? What will you do? Will you dare to renounce your follower's comparison of you and Jesus Christ? I hope so. Will you dare to renounce their sniping at Sarah Palin? I doubt it, if you did they wouldn't have anything else to throw. Will you dare to listen to this man who has been defending YOUR country for YOU against those who, whether you believe it or not, want to destroy YOU? In short: Will you dare to change?

Obama's [Shocking] Religious Views

I have been concerned about Obama - very concerned. I have also been particularly concerned about the conservative grass-roots and just how enlivened they may get, or more precisely, how enlivened McCain can get them. At this time, though, I am praising God that Obama is the Democratic candidate - he is the ultimate way that I see to get the conservative grass-roots very pumped and ready to vote.

That said, these short videos from [Focus on the Family] CitizenLink's "Turn Signal" news reports will make you want to go vote in November, and get the word out as much as possible until then.

To see other Turn Signal programs, as well as CitizenLink's other online video program, Stoplight, go here - they are great, I highly recomend all of them.

Federal Fridays - Congressional Christmas Capers

While here in Illinois site seeing, visiting friends and hearing more "happy holidays" than I can count, congress has been discussing the great Christmas debate. Gary Bauer discussed the topic a good deal, mentioning in on the 12th and the 13th.

funny that this needs to be discussed at all, and I find it hitting me just a little bit the wrong way that the congress is "doing" (voting on etc.) something about this topic. anyhow, enjoy, grimace, and laugh for lack of anything else to do:

Congress Says “Merry Christmas”

Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted 372-to-9 in support of a resolution recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith in the founding of the United States and formation of Western Civilization. The resolution was sponsored by Rep. Steve King of Iowa, a great conservative champion. (This political action committee played a key role in helping Steve King win his primary election in 2002. Just one more way we are helping to defend your values!)

Earlier this year, the House passed measures honoring Ramadan and Diwali, a Hindu holiday. But Rep. King noted, “Watching Congress honor Islam during Ramadan, and also Diwali … brought it home to me that we were doing that and not honoring Christianity. …This nation has about 225 million Christians out of 300 million… And the foundations of this nation are a Christian foundation [and] our founders were Christian. So for us to move forward towards Christmas without honoring Christ is, I think a great omission, especially if we’re going to honor other religions.”

By the way, all nine “No” votes were Democrats, and eight of the nine voted in support of the Ramadan resolution.

Thursday, December 13, 2007
Our staff regularly monitors the websites of the radical Left – just to know what the opposition is up to. This morning we were stunned to find a post on the site of a homosexual blogger (who has been on a crusade to “out” Republican members of Congress) that reads, “It’s official!!!! Democrats are a bunch of [expletive] wimps.”

His ever-so-tolerant post provided a link to a roll call vote taken in the House of Representatives this week. What could lead a homosexual activist to level such invective at the Democrats? Needless to say, we were very curious. Had the party of Hillary, Pelosi and Kennedy suddenly reversed course and passed the marriage protection amendment or banned homosexual adoptions? What earth-shattering news had we missed? Are you ready for this?

As I reported yesterday, the House overwhelmingly voted in support of a resolution recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith in the founding of the United States and formation of Western Civilization. Amazingly, the rage of this militant homosexual activist was focused on the fact that only nine Democrats voted against the resolution recognizing Christmas and Christianity.

The Contrast

The Republican MSNBC debate yesterday was dedicated first and foremost to a
discussion of economic issues. I don’t know about you, but as I watched,
one thing became very evident to me: When it comes to taxes on family
investors and businesses, any of these GOP candidates is far superior to
Hillary Clinton or any of the other main Democrat contenders.

It would take most of this daily report to list all the proposed new taxes
that the Democrat candidates have proposed in their debates and that
Democrat members of Congress have actually introduced in the last six
months. But here’s a short list:

Do you think gasoline is too expensive? The liberals want to add on a new
federal levy that will take it up another 50 cents per gallon. Are you
self-employed? The Left wants to lift the tax ceiling so you will pay 15%
in Social Security taxes on all your self-employment income. Do you get
dividends from stocks or have you got capital gains? Democrats want to
repeal the Bush tax cuts that have spurred 48 straight months of job
growth.

The Republican candidates last night talked about optimism, hope,
investment, and entrepreneurship. The Democrats, led by Hillary, emphasize
failure and negativity. And to top it all off, they play the class warfare
card by attacking every successful U.S. industry and any American who has
achieved economic success.

2008 will be a tough year. But I remain convinced that if we keep the
coalition together of social issue conservatives, economic conservatives
and foreign policy conservatives, we can win!

Iran’s Hitler Speaks; Is The West Listening?

It may surprise you to know that “Jerusalem Day” is celebrated in Iran.
It’s a big day with lots of speeches and parades, but it’s not what you
think. The Islamic radicals created the day in 1979 as a way of showing
Muslim solidarity with the Palestinian “resistance” and to express the
Muslim hope that Jerusalem would one day be “liberated” from the Jews.

Iran’s “president,” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, used last week’s “Jerusalem Day”
event to once again lash out against Israel and America. At a rally in
Tehran last week, Ahmadinejad whipped the crowd into a frenzy with an anti-
Semitic tirade reminiscent of a Nazi rally at Nuremberg. To give you a
glimpse of the scene, just consider this report from Reuters:

“Tens of thousands marched in a rally to mark the day, including soldiers,
students and clerics. Black-clad women with small children clutching
balloons emblazoned ‘Death to Israel’ were among those flocking the streets
of central Tehran. ‘Death to America, Death to Israel,’ chanted the
marchers, many carrying portraits of Khomeini and his successor Supreme
Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”

Here are some excerpts of Ahmadinejad’s rant:

“The Palestinian people are standing firm. The Iranian people and other
peoples will not stop until all of Palestinian territory is liberated.
They [world powers] should not think that the Iranian nation and other
nations in the region will take off their hands off the throat of the
Zionists and their supporters. …

“But the Iranian nation has a question and as long as there is no clear and
reasonable response to this question, it will remain. They have made the
Holocaust sacred and do not allow anyone to ask questions. Under the
pretext of the Holocaust they are allowed to commit whatever crime they
like. Europeans cannot tolerate the Zionists in their region and country,
but they want to impose them on the people of the region... Give these vast
lands of Canada and Alaska to them to create a country for themselves.”

Ahmadinejad also added, “The creation, continued existence and unlimited
(Western) support for this regime is an insult to human dignity. The
occupation of Palestine is not limited to one land. The Zionist issue is
now a global issue.”

Our next president will very likely have to confront this madman and his
pursuit of nuclear weapons. Barack Obama thinks he can reason with him and
has pledged to meet with Mahmoud in the first year of his presidency.
Regardless, any Democrat would be hamstrung by the radical leftwing fringe
and groups like MoveOn.org. What about the Republicans? That topic was
also brought up in last night’s debate.

Now, I know there are a number of you intrigued by Ron Paul. Please
rethink your position! Here’s what he said yesterday about dealing with
Iran:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: “Okay. Same question -- deadline, gentlemen, it’s so
important. Congressman Paul, do you believe the president needs
authorization of Congress to attack strategic targets in Iran, nuclear
facilities?”

REP. PAUL: “Absolutely. … You’re not allowed to go to war without a
declaration of war. Now, as far as fleeting enemies go, yes, if there’s an
imminent attack on us, we’d never had that happen in 220 years. The
thought that the Iranians could pose an imminent attack on the United
States is preposterous. There’s no way.”

Has the man heard of Pearl Harbor? If he’s not a fan of “ancient history,”
where was he just six years ago, on the morning of 9/11?

We’re living in an age where terrorists have turned airplanes into weapons
of mass destruction. Madmen, hiding anywhere in the world -- say in
Pyongyang, Damascus, or Tehran for example -- with the right technology can
obliterate an American city in a matter of minutes. Paul seems completely
oblivious to this reality.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Whatever attributes some
perceive, Ron Paul is clueless about the threat facing this country.
Isolationism and appeasement didn’t keep us out of World War I, allowed
Hitler to conquer most of Europe and North Africa and gave him a free hand
to murder six million Jews, and won’t prevent Islamofascists from attacking
us in the future. They have declared war on Israel, on America and Western
Civilization. We need a president who understand that fact and who is
committed to our victory in the war against Islamofascism.

Federal Fridays - Baby-sitting the Baby-sitters

The government has taken on some sitter-like mentalities these days. From the Public Schools to the many departments of Social Services, all the way down to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the government seems to be doing nothing but baby-sitting anything that affects tax-payers. The government does not seem to be satisfied with what it already oversees and runs, though. It’s now trying to micro-manage the actual tax-payer. Their ways and methods are many, but that isn’t the point of this article.

Think of it this way. The government wants to stick its fingers into the private sector. Ever since the start of this government, the governed have fought against this very thing. So, what does the government do? You would think that they would be prudent with the money coming from those that they are trying to micro-manage, right? Of course you would, but our government evidently doesn’t think so just now. Instead of being economical with what they are entrusted, they spend exorbitant amounts of money on things that are not necessarily the most important, and never get to the things you as a tax-payer really care about.

Some recent occurrences at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provide us with a look at this. The CDC, while mostly interested in chronic and infectious diseases, is also involved in the arena of encouraging exercise and proper nutrition*.

It seemed that the morale (and physical fitness) of CDC employees was less than desirable. So, in September of 2006, the CDC opened a new and highly improved fitness center on their main campus in Atlanta. Long deferred for re-modeling, CDC employees were hardly content with the old, and looked wide-eyed at the new 16,000 sq. foot center*. The Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management’s Republican Office reported (on their website):

“It appears the $200,000+ state of the art “lifestyle” center featuring saunas, zero-gravity chairs, and mood enhancing light shows or its scenic Japanese Gardens have not been sufficient to improving morale at the CDC[.]”

Even this center, though, is less extensive than some that are provided to employees of business giants, or privately owned gyms.

The success of this project is not yet clear, but more people are exercising*. But what’s the point? So, they built a fitness center? I have absolutely nothing against fitness centers. But why is this money being spent in this fashion? It’s our money they’re spending. It’s not theirs. And, after all, what was accomplished?

Well, according to a CDC internal survey of employees, a drop of employee morale and feelings that the CDC was changing in a good way between 2003 and 2005 was evident**. Other indications of the same has moved the CDC brass to hire two ombudsmen for $250,000 a piece. Ombudsmen are often quite helpful to those inside of any organization. But, true to form, the ombudsmen the government hired are having trouble explaining just what they’ve been doing for the first three months of their year-long contract. Go here for more information.

Another example of tax-dollar waste is that the U.S. is involved in the United Nations. Besides the political hoops and loops, the UN is simply a wasteful entity. In 2004, the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) paid a historian $567,379 to write a book entitled, UNDP: A Better Way?. This book is all praise for the UNDP itself. Consider this budget for the book:

$252,000 for the historian's 21-month salary

$87,639 for the "project coordinator's" salary

$91,559 for "research and editing"

$37,299 for travel

$26,752 for office space

$55,452 for purchasing mass quantities of its own book

The Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management Republican Office noted on their website:

“Overlooking the fact that the U.N. must pay historians to praise itself, U.N. officials continue to criticize the U.S. for not giving more than the $108 million we give to the UNDP each year. This criticism towards the #1 U.N. donor seems odd at a time when U.N. management should be asking UNDP how many Guatemalan farmers could be trained to maximize crop yields, how many Burmese refugees could be taught to read and write, how many Sudanese survivors of genocide could be fed a meal, how many micro-loans could be administered in India for $567,379?”

Ah, but how does the U.S.’s involvement with the U.N. affect you, the tax-payer?

Consider this recent spending spree from the U.N. for a moment. The Secretary General (Kofi Annan) decided to spruce up his New York City apartment to the tune of $4.3 million. According to the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management Republican Office:

“The U.S. taxpayer, who covers 22% of all U.N. operating expenses, will be expected to donate $1 million towards this lush project.” And, “Part of the plan is to spend $200,000 on a new kitchen alone. For $200,000, the U.N. could purchase 200,000 malaria pills to help save 200,000 kids suffering in Africa. Surely a normal, everyday kitchen is worth 200,000 lives?”

Please note that these few things I’ve mentioned hardly scratch the surface of both our Governments waste, or that of the United Nations.

The United States Government is trying very hard to baby-sit its tax-payers. With all the waste going on (measuring $29 billion in 2006 alone according to Citizens against Government Waste) don’t you think it’s time that the tax-payers started keeping an eye on the government? As crazy and unnecessary as you may think it, it’s time to start baby-sitting the self-imposed, over-paid baby-sitter that is trying so hard to use our money.

Federal Fridays - Changing DST (Is that LEGAL??)

You wouldn't believe it, but someone already did it, legal or not. Yes, DST has already been changed, even though your calender doesn't say so. Who is the culprit? According to the Chicago Tribune: "At 2 a.m. Sunday, daylight saving time starts three weeks earlier than usual in a federal effort to save energy." http://www.chicagotribune.com/technology/la-fi-daylight6mar06,0,6382414.story?coll=chi-bizfront-hed Yes, the Federal government has changed it, and failed to give us a year so that our calenders could be changed! OK, so that would be a little overboard, but still, it's kind of weird. However, now that we know, we can deal with this, right? I mean, what could go wrong? A lot. "[M]illions of computers, servers and networks are programmed to move the hands forward on the first Sunday in April." "[H]eat and lights in some buildings could come on an hour later than they should. Meeting rooms may be double booked. Sprinklers might go haywire. Doors may lock and unlock when they aren't supposed to. People could be late to meetings with their bosses if their computerized calendars aren't tweaked in time." http://www.chicagotribune.com/technology/la-fi-daylight6mar06,0,6382414.story?coll=chi-bizfront-hed Many things have been fixed, are fixable, or are tolerable: "[T]echnologists are racing against the computer clocks to make the software fixes." "TiVo and other digital video recorders have made fixes. Those with older computer systems may have to hunt online for software fixes called "patches," or just endure having a clock out of sync for three weeks. Still, Kevin Watne, president of Los Angeles technology consultant Generation IX, has a novel solution for Californians if all else fails: set their haywire technology on Mountain Standard Time for three weeks." http://www.chicagotribune.com/technology/la-fi-daylight6mar06,0,6382414.story?coll=chi-bizfront-hed Now, that, was a good idea. Isn't it hilarious how much can be affected - how many people have to work, how many news stories are written, how much annoyance is caused - by the Federal Government?

Something Fun

I love politics. But, as this is not a political blog, I am wary of putting political opinions here, as that isn't the point of this blog. Yet, some things about politics and the government have a place here I think.

And so I am launching Federal Fridays. Post's that have the hilarious, strange and/or slightly insane things that the Federal Government is doing with your tax dollars!

So, don't go away, Federal Fridays begins tomorow!
